Hillebrandt's House
How does a man fare when he marries for money? The play depicts the founders of a new community at Blönduós, merchants Thomsen and Hillebrandt, who are in fierce commercial competition in 1876-77. Hillebrandt, a Danish officer, always wears his military uniform on special occasions. A wealthy widow, Þórdís of Vindhæli, who is over seventy, is in love with this charming man. Hillebrandt, only half her age, exploits the situation to solve his financial problems. The marriage is stormy, and Hillebrandt turns to drink. The competition between the two merchants comes to a sudden end with the death of Thomsen when out riding, and Hillebrandt is the only witness.
