Landsstjˇrnin stendur ■vÝ frammi fyrir almennri uppreisn fˇlksins. Nřr sřslumaur (Lßrus Bjarnason) er skipaur sem jafnframt ß a rannsaka meinta valdnÝslu fyrrverandi sřslumanns. The Rebels at ═safj÷rur

The Rebels at ═safj÷rur opened at the National Theatre Main Stage on the 26th of September 1986, directed by Brynja Benediktsdˇttir with set designed by Sigurjˇn Jˇhannsson and music by Atli Heimir Sveinsson. The play has been published in book form.
"The place is ═safj÷rur, a small town in the remote north-west of Iceland. The time is the 1890s. What happens when a young and conscientious, yet radical and politically active sheriff makes a minor error in the legal procedure when dealing with an uncooperative suspected murderer? Naturally his rivals in politics make the most of the situation and take advantage of the blunder. The young sheriff is sentenced and thrown our of office. What the sheriff's rivals did not take into account was his immense popularity with the common people of Isafj÷rur. He is a hero in the eyes of most of the town's populace who stand by him and are willing to fight. Consequently the government has a full-scale rebellion on its hands. The government appoints a new sheriff who is also supposed to investigate the former sheriff's alleged abuse of power. The new sheriff, however, is inexperienced and totally incapable of dealing with the situation. After years of struggle, legal proceedings, investigations and intrigues, the troubles are finally resolved and peace is restored, but no one has won except time, which has brought new and progressive ideas. Basically a drama about the conflict between conservative and progressive movements at a time when ideas of democracy were spreading af a pace over Europe."
